Almost certainly by the time you read this you’ll know the result because tomorrow is a big day for Peru. Not since 1984 has Peru been this far in the football world cup and tonight they play New Zealand. Lima is at fever pitch with replica shirts, headbands and various other tat for sale on every street corner.
Lima has a population of 13 million, is the 3rd
biggest city in South America and has really weird climate. It’s the same
temperature all year, almost never rains and is always cloudy. However the
craziest thing about Lima is the traffic, and the driving. Take a taxi ride at
your peril and if you want a thrill, sit in the front passenger seat!
On our first night we had a leavers dinner for the 6 ending
their trip here. And after three weeks together we were all really sad to see
them go. Enterprising Holly and Matt awarded everybody a prize, Deb won best
laugh and me most helpful cook. Other got prizes for the most cigarettes
smoked, the least laundry done and the most frequent poo’er! I’m sure you get
the drift. Well it got a bit messy and by 1.30 Deb was on the karaoke in a late
night Rock Bar.
On our free day following, and slightly worse for wear, Deb
and I took a free city tour. Starting with some history, then watching the
changing of the guard at the presidential palace and onto markets, residential
districts, catacombs and museums.
We had a late lunch of local dishes, Pisco Sours, beer and
then in the evening enjoyed a brilliant light and music display with fountains in
a nearby park.
So Vamos Peru. Good luck for tomorrow.
I had to dig it out via t’Interweb but the footie result was a goalless draw in New Zealand. So, all to play for on Wednesday. I know what a football fan you are Tim so here’s a (not so) interesting fact: Peru are ranked 10th in the World (who’d have known?!) whilst NZ are 122nd. Lima sounds lively!
